Frequently asked questions.

Two sections: questions about the practice in general, and questions specific to the ketamine therapy programme. If yours is not here, we will answer it on the call.

About the practice.

Who do you see?

Adolescents and adults seeking outpatient psychiatric care. The conditions we most commonly treat are depression, anxiety, PTSD, postpartum mood disorders, addiction, sleep problems, borderline personality, adolescent mental health, OCD, and bipolar disorder. See conditions for the full list.

Do I need a referral?

A referral from your treating doctor is helpful but not required. If you do not have one, you can contact us directly to arrange a consultation.

What happens at a first appointment?

A 60 to 90 minute consultation with Dr. Nabiswa to walk through your history, current symptoms, what you have already tried, and your goals. The outcome is a working diagnosis (or the next step toward one) and a written plan you understand and consent to.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

A list of current medications and doses, any prior psychiatric or medical reports you have, and, if helpful, a brief written history. Identification is also useful.

Do you accept medical insurance?

Parklands Mindcare Centre does not work directly with insurers. Pricing is discussed before booking. Some insurers will reimburse you on submission of a paid invoice; please check with your provider.

How quickly can I be seen?

We aim to offer a first consultation within one to two weeks of your enquiry. Urgent cases are accommodated where the schedule allows. For acute emergencies, please attend a hospital emergency department.

Do you provide therapy?

We do not offer weekly talk therapy in-house. Where therapy is the right next step, we refer to a trusted network of psychologists and counsellors in Nairobi and stay in coordination with them.

Do you see children?

We see adolescents from around age 13. For younger children we will refer to a child and adolescent psychiatrist with the appropriate specialism.

Will my information be confidential?

Yes. Your records and the content of your appointments are treated as clinical and shared only with your consent, except in the limited circumstances where Kenyan law or professional duty requires otherwise (notably, imminent risk of serious harm).

What about emergencies outside clinic hours?

We do not provide emergency psychiatric crisis response outside clinic hours. In a mental health emergency, please attend your nearest hospital emergency department or call Kenya's emergency services.

About the ketamine therapy programme.

Who is the ketamine programme for?

Adults with severe or treatment-resistant cases of depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, suicidal ideation, or selected chronic pain syndromes, where standard psychiatric care has been adequately tried and has not worked. See ketamine therapy for the full picture.

How quickly will I feel a difference?

Many patients notice a meaningful change in mood within hours of the first infusion. For others, it builds across the first few sessions. Compare this with conventional antidepressants, which typically take 3 to 6 weeks to take effect.

How successful is ketamine therapy?

In severe psychiatric conditions, response rates of around 70 to 80% are reported. For comparison, response rates for standard antidepressants are around 40 to 50%.

Is ketamine a cure for depression?

No. Ketamine is a fast-acting, effective treatment, not a cure. It works best as part of a broader plan that includes therapy, medication review, and lifestyle support.

Is ketamine addictive?

At the low doses used in supervised clinical psychiatric practice, the risk of addiction or misuse is minimal. The risks people associate with ketamine come from recreational, high-dose, or unsupervised use, not from monitored low-dose infusions.

What does treatment feel like?

Most patients describe a calm, dream-like state during the infusion. Some experience mild dissociation, which is expected and resolves quickly once the infusion ends. Our team is with you the entire time.

What are the side effects?

The most common short-term effects are mild and short-lived: nausea, dizziness, blurred vision, slight increase in blood pressure or heart rate, and a brief dissociative experience. These typically resolve within an hour. Serious side effects are rare in monitored, low-dose clinical use.

How many sessions will I need?

A typical initial course is a series of sessions over two to three weeks, followed by maintenance sessions tailored to your response. Your plan is designed for you, not from a template.

Can I drive home afterwards?

No. You should arrange for someone to accompany you home, and you should not drive, operate machinery, or sign legal documents on the day of treatment.

Will it interact with my current medications?

We review your full medication list during the initial consultation. Some medications need to be adjusted; most do not.

Can I just come in for ketamine therapy without the rest?

No. Ketamine therapy at Parklands Mindcare Centre runs as part of psychiatric care, not in isolation. Eligibility is decided after a full assessment, and the programme always sits alongside ongoing review.
